How do I know if I have enough credit history?
If you're not sure where your credit score stands, there are plenty of ways to check it. NerdWallet offers a free credit score, as do many other personal finance websites and some credit card issuers. If you have years of on-time payments and use your credit cards fairly lightly, you probably have a decent score.
- You have a long, positive history with the same accounts. ...
- You pay your credit bills on time. ...
- You have no collections or defaults in your name. ...
- You don't carry credit card balances from month to month. ...
- You got the best rate offered on a loan.
We consider a 'good' score to be between 881 and 960, with 'fair' (also the average) between 721 and 880. However, there's no 'magic' number that will guarantee lenders will approve an application if you apply. If your credit score is poor, you'll probably find it harder to borrow money or access certain services.
Most lenders (and scoring models) consider anything less than two years of credit history to be little more than a decent start. When you get into the two- to four-year range, you're just taking the training wheels off. Having at least five years of good credit history puts you in the middle of the pack.
How to access your report. You can request a free copy of your credit report from each of three major credit reporting agencies – Equifax®, Experian®, and TransUnion® – once each year at AnnualCreditReport.com or call toll-free 1-877-322-8228.
- Apply for a secured credit card. ...
- Become an authorized user. ...
- Take out a credit-builder loan. ...
- Keep a close eye on your credit utilization. ...
- Make small purchases and pay them off quickly.
Insufficient credit history means you have no proven track record with creditors that lend money or other assets. This prevents lenders from assessing your credit risk. Insufficient credit history means you have no proven track record with creditors with regard to borrowing money or other assets.
Although ranges vary depending on the credit scoring model, generally credit scores from 580 to 669 are considered fair; 670 to 739 are considered good; 740 to 799 are considered very good; and 800 and up are considered excellent.
It is theoretically possible to get a 700 credit score with a collection account on your credit report. However, it is not common with traditional scoring models. A derogatory mark like a collection account on your credit report can make it incredibly difficult to obtain a good credit score like 700 or over.
Credit history is extremely important to lenders when you apply for financial products like personal loans, credit cards, auto loans, mortgages, and more. Lenders look at your credit history and the credit score that is based off your credit history to determine your risk as a borrower.
How long does it take to build sufficient credit history?
Paying on time every month, keeping your credit utilization low and having a mix of different credit can help build your scores over time. If you have little or no credit history, it may take three to six months of credit activity to get your first credit scores.
Anything less than two years is considered a short credit history. Once you have established between two and four years of credit, lenders will better understand how well you manage your credit accounts. A credit age of five years will raise your score as long as you've been managing your accounts well.
No credit history versus bad credit
In other words, it's possible to have a good credit score but not enough credit history for a lender to feel confident enough to approve you for the loan. And in some cases, the bureau says, you might get credit without a credit score but you'll have to pay a higher interest rate.
- Check Your Credit Score And Credit Report. ...

- Always Pay Your Bills On Time. ...

- Don't Take Out Credit Unless You Need It.
- Understand the concept of credit. ...
- Check and monitor your credit. ...
- Dispute credit report errors. ...
- Open a credit card account. ...
- Take out a credit-builder loan. ...
- Become an authorized user. ...

For some credit scoring models, paying off collection accounts may improve credit scores. FICO® Score 9, FICO Score 10, VantageScore® 3.0 and VantageScore 4.0 credit scoring models penalize unpaid collection accounts. Paying off collection accounts may help improve these scores.
There's no such thing as a zero score. Having “no score” simply means you don't have any number tied to your credit profile. You can be absent from the scoring model if you've never had a credit card or loan, or if you haven't used credit in a long time.
Having no credit is better than having bad credit, though both can hold you back. Bad credit shows potential lenders a negative track record of managing credit. Meanwhile, no credit means lenders can't tell how you'll handle repaying debts because you don't have much experience.
Highlights: While older models of credit scores used to go as high as 900, you can no longer achieve a 900 credit score. The highest score you can receive today is 850. Anything above 800 is considered an excellent credit score.
Most negative items should automatically fall off your credit reports seven years from the date of your first missed payment, at which point your credit score may start rising. But if you are otherwise using credit responsibly, your score may rebound to its starting point within three months to six years.
Does anyone have an 850 credit score?
How many people have perfect FICO® Scores? Data from April 2023 found that about 1.7% of people who meet the minimum requirements for a FICO® Score had an 850.
While an account in collection can have a significant negative impact on your credit, it won't stay on your credit reports forever. Accounts in collection generally remain on your credit reports for seven years, plus 180 days from whenever the account first became past due.
Paying off collections could increase scores from the latest credit scoring models, but if your lender uses an older version, your score might not change. Regardless of whether it will raise your score quickly, paying off collection accounts is usually a good idea.
Collections accounts generally stick to your credit reports for seven years from the point the account first went delinquent, even if the account has been paid in full. But you may want them off sooner than that because unpaid collections can make you look bad to potential creditors.
Using more of your credit card balance than usual — even if you pay on time — can reduce your score until a new, lower balance is reported the following month. Closed accounts and lower credit limits can also result in lower scores even if your payment behavior has not changed.
