Abstract
This chapter reintroduces Quentin Crisp to the world. Born in England in 1908 but always feeling like an American at heart, Crisp made the most of his latter-day acclaim by moving to New York City in 1979, where he spent his final decades as one of the many eccentrics enjoying their fifteen minutes of Warholian fame. In New York, Crisp became himself and perfected his philosophy of style. He went to art openings, attended parties, appeared on television, and wrote books advancing his theory of style. Here he describes his life as an effeminate man born, he thought, in the wrong place and time, and his eventual recognition of style as a kind of survival strategy. Crisp’s theory of style is that it is an alternative to identity and a path to self-preservation—a way of being and exaggerating your personality rather than be held accountable for it by an angry mob. Whereas identity is given to us from without, one may achieve a sense of personal style from within, becoming more like ourselves by becoming stylists.
