How to Install Magisk without TWRP [Guide] (2024)

Android phones are well known for customization and the option to upgrade root privilege. And all this is possible by rooting the Android phone. But to root an Android phone, we need to install Magisk which is the source for seamless root. There are few methods to install Magisk like using a custom recovery. In case you don’t want to install TWRP Recovery, then this guide is for you. Here you will know how to install Magisk without TWRP or any other custom Recovery.

TWRP is the most popular custom recovery for Android phones. The TeamWin project started many years back when rooting and other modifications were easy. And since then the TWRP Recovery improved a lot with a bunch of new features. But it is generally for users who like to change ROMs frequently or install zip files. So if you are not planning for installing any custom recovery, you still have the chance to install Magisk on Android phones.

In this guide, we are not going to use any custom recovery including TWRP & OrangeFox. Although excluding the custom recovery reduces the number of ways, still we have an effective method to install Magisk and root Android phones.

Install Magisk Without TWRP

Magisk is a powerful tool/app for Android that makes rooting possible. Other methods like one click root are no longer effective due to the improved security on Android phones. But all thanks to John Wu for the Magisk which is the only effective tool for rooting. And it works for all Android phones if you manage to unlock bootloader.

Here in this guide, we are going to use Magisk to patch the file from Firmware which we can install through fastboot commands or through the flash tool depending on the device you have. We are going to split the guide into different sections which will make the guide easy. Let’s start with the requirements.

Prerequisites:

  • Unlock bootloader of your phone
  • Take a full backup of your phone
  • Charge your phone to at least 60%
  • Download Magisk
  • Install on your PC
  • Download Odin Flash Tool (for Samsung)
  • Download firmware for your Android phone

Note: Make sure you are installing the Magisk at your own risk. It can even brick your device and in such cases, you can flash firmware by yourself or visit the nearest service center.

Patch Boot Image or AP files with Magisk

In this section, you will know how you can patch a file. Magisk patched file will let you install the Magisk on your device for upgrading root privilege. The file which needs to be patched depends on the device you own. Let’s see how to patch a file using Magisk.

  1. First install the Magisk application on your Android phone.
  2. Download & copy the firmware on your PC.
  3. Now Extract the boot.img file from the firmware. If you have Samsung firmware, then extract the AP.tar file.
  4. Now copy the extracted boot image or AP tar file to your phone storage.
  5. Open the Magisk app on your phone.
  6. Now click on the first Install option right next to the Magisk.

  7. It will show the Method tab, expand it to see available options.
  8. Check the option ‘Select and Patch a File’ and click on the Let’s Go.

  9. Now it will lead you to file explorer, select the file that you copied the file boot.img or AP.tar file.
  10. It will then start patching the file. Wait for the success message and the output patched file will save to the download folder as magisk_patched or similar name.

So that’s an easy way to patch a file that helps to root Android phones. And once you have the patched file, you are good to install Magisk on your phone, and that too without custom recovery. Steps to Install Magisk without TWRP

  1. Download the platform tools folder on your PC and extract it.
  2. Copy the Magisk patched image file to your PC in the extracted platform tools folder. Rename the patched image file to boot.img.
  3. Open developer options on your phone and make sure OEM Unlocking and USB Debugging are enabled.

  4. Turn off your phone and boot the phone in fastboot or bootloader or download mode.
  5. And connect your phone with a PC using a USB cable.
  6. In the platform tools folder, press Shift and right click on an empty area and open Command window. Or enter CMD in the file path.

  7. Now enter below command to check if your device is connected. It should return some id.
    • fastboot devices
  8. Now to install Magisk without TWRP, enter the command given below.
    • fastboot flash boot boot.img
  9. After flashing the patched boot file, reboot your phone.
  10. Now open the Magisk app and it will show that the Magisk is installed. If the app asks for further process follow the in-app instructions and reboot your phone again.

Steps to Install Magisk without TWRP on Samsung Phones

  1. Extract the Odin tool on your PC and run the Odin flash tool.
  2. Copy the patched tar file and copy it to your PC.
  3. Make sure OEM unlocking is enabled in developer options on your Samsung phone.
  4. Turn off your phone and boot your Samsung phone to download mode.
  5. Connect your phone to PC using a USB cable.
  6. On the Odin tool, go to the options tab and uncheck Auto Reboot option.
  7. Now click on AP and load the patched tar file.
  8. Load BL file in BL tab, CP in CP tab, and HOME_CSC file in CSC tab. You can find these three files in the extracted firmware.

  9. After loading all the files click on Start to install Magisk without TWRP.
  10. It will give the pass message after installing the firmware.
  11. Restart your device and setup the Magisk app.

Now you have the Magisk installed on your Samsung phone.
