Lifeguard Training – Full Course – Age 15+

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. The blended learning format allows students to work independently on theory through a series of informational videos and tutorials. They then present what skills they learned in a hands-on class.

Upon completion of this course participants will receiveAmerican Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AEDvalid for 2 years.

Prerequisites–The following prerequisitesneed to be completed in front of a Lifeguard Trainer, in person, at the YMCA, at the start of the first class period. If students do not complete or pass the prerequisites they may be transferred to the next class (or one within 3 months) for no additional charge. Transfers will only be given once.

  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may use front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
  • Complete the following events in 1 minute, 40 seconds:
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Face may be in or out of the water.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath.
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Certification Requirements

  • Attend and participate in all class sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  • Pass the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with minimum grades of 80 percent.

Lifeguarding is a great first job, a great resume builder, and it helps you develop work ethic.

Lifeguard Review is NOW: Lifeguard Recertification 15+ with Lifeguard Certificate

The purpose of this course is to review the skills of a lifeguard and check the knowledge of the participants. Upon successful completion of this class, participant’s lifeguarding certifications will be renewed for two more years.

The following prerequisitesneed to be completed in front of a Lifeguard Trainer, in person, at the YMCA, at the start of the first class period. If students do not complete or pass the prerequisites they may be transferred to the next class (or one within 3 months) for no additional charge. Transfers will only be given once.

  • Complete the following sequence:Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards with face in the water and rhythmic breathing. Immediately after swimming 150 yards, maintain position at the surface of the water without support for 2 minutes by treading water with no hands. Directly after the tread, swim an additional 50 yards.Candidates may use front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed.
  • Complete the following events in 1 minute, 40 seconds (no goggles):
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Face may be in or out of the water.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath.
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Prerequisites

  • Must have an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate that expires no earlier than 30 days before the class date.
  • Complete Pre-req swim-tread-swim sequence
  • Complete brick retrieval in 1 minute 40 seconds
